Continual improvement. That’s what Visser Agro in Wieringerwerf is all about. Arable farmer Sierd Visser grows his seed potatoes and onions in a nature-inclusive and energy-neutral manner. Additionally, he invests in efficiency and quality. He is part of the group contributing to the development of the Optica Q, Schouten’s optical quality sorter. “Sharing knowledge is very normal for us. By learning from each other, the Netherlands leads the way in the agricultural world.”
"We set the standard, and the machine adheres to it."
“the processing speed is much higher. And our labor costs per kilogram have been significantly reduced"
Bypass
The Optica Q does not yet assess all potatoes. “The machine needs to become smarter first. That takes time,” explains Sierd. To bridge this time, a bypass has been installed. “This means we can decide whether to send the potatoes through the inspection room or the Optica Q. Meanwhile, we continue to work on improvement. I expect that eventually we won’t need the inspection room anymore.”
Shared ambition
Sierd actively contributes to the development of the Optica Q, alongside with agricultural companies Kamp, Maters and Kloppenburg. “Personally, I find it important that the Optica Q can assess onions as well as potatoes. That has recently become possible. Additionally, we need to keep adding data so that the Optica Q performs just as well as a human. That’s our shared ambition.”
