‘The Optica proved itself after just one season’

Joachim Kamp and his brother Laurent are Optica pioneers. They were the first to use this optical sorting machine on their arable farm, Kamp Agro, in the Noordoostpolder. It worked so well that they are ready for the next step.

“We were looking for a modern technique to sort our potatoes more accurately, but with high capacity,” says Joachim. “We couldn’t find any machine that met both requirements. Then we met Gerben Schouten, director of Schouten, at a birthday party. His company was working on an optical sorting solution, and Gerben was interested in our ideas. This is how we got involved in the development of the Optica. In 2013, the first small prototype was in our shed, and we worked with Schouten’s R&D department on optimization.

Two years later, we had the first official Optica with ten tracks. This sorting machine proved itself after just one season. We sorted more potatoes in the seed potato size, sorting was much faster, we had fewer damaged potatoes, and our capacity was greater than with our traditional sorting machine. Due to these positive experiences, we are now ready for the next step. In our shed, there is now a brand new and optimized Optica. With a bunker system and twelve tracks, we achieve a capacity of over fourteen tons per hour. We are confident that this investment will pay off.”

  • Spacing device

The potatoes are spaced equally from each other
  • Extraction system

Excess foliage is removed through air extraction
  • Optical reading unit

The potatoes are inspected one by one

Advantages of the Optica CS

Accurate sorting

"The Optica sorts much more accurately than a traditional sorter. We sort significantly more potatoes in the higher-value seed potato size than with conventional shock and shake sorting techniques. It increases our yield."

Reduced costs

"The cameras detect clods and a large portion of misshapen potatoes, making sorting much faster. This saves us significantly on costs in the sorting room."

Easy to operate

"Sorting sizes and assigning to outputs is very simple. We also have various templates for batch repetitions."

More insight

"The Optica automatically collects all kinds of data, giving us more insight into the expected yield. We can easily view the data on our smartphone, tablet, or PC."

Product-friendly

"The short path with minimal drops and size separation with air prevents damage to our potatoes."
